WILLIAM’S BEDROOM

As William entered his bedroom, the enormity of what he had done washed over him. The events of the ball paled in comparison to the problems he had created by consummating their marriage tonight, instead of waiting until he had separated his heart from his duty. Ashamed to recall just how far afield his conduct had exceeded the perfunctory act he had envisioned their first joining would be, his conscience taunted him.

What were you thinking, letting passion overrule common sense? If you cannot isolate your feelings, how are you to survive in this marriage?

With self-disgust, William recalled a rule he created whilst explaining to Elizabeth how their marriage would work. It was solely designed to exemplify his indifference, and he cringed to recall how brazenly he had claimed no interest in her bed except to sire children, and that once she became pregnant, she would be free of his company until he decided it was time for another child.

How poetic that I will be penalised by the rules I created to punish her. Only a fool is hoisted with his own petard!

Self-loathing sent him to the chest and the decanter of brandy. Picking it up, he tried to fill a glass, but his hands shook so violently that brandy splashed over the tray. Pausing to decide whether self-respect or pity would triumph, at length he set the decanter down. Tossing the glass at the hearth, he watched as it splintered against the stone.
